About Us

How much should I give?

At Homer’s Coffee House we are very happy to be able to offer the very best in local and regional Christian entertainment. The performers who play here have been practicing daily for years. The bands that play here typically rehearse 3 to 4 hours per week. They do this because they love it and they love to play.

Still, playing music is a major commitment. Frequently musicians have to take off work early, travel some distance, spend several hours setting up, doing sound checks, then taking down equipment, loading up, traveling, and so forth. A working musician in a five piece band might expect to make $100 a night. With rehearsals, travel, and playing, this works out to be barely minimum wage.

At Homer’s, we have a desire to make great music available to everyone, regardless of their economic situation. For this reason, we have resisted having a cover charge and have asked performers to play for tips or an offering. Most have been very generous in doing so. The average attendance on a music night is between 50 and 75 people. For the band to make as much money as they would expect at another club, each person should give about $10.00. A good rule of thumb would be $10 per person to hear a four or five piece band, a little more for a larger group, and perhaps $5 for a soloist or duet.

You are welcome to make a check out directly to the performers, or if you wish to give by credit card, you can do so at the counter and we will make sure the money gets to the musicians. Otherwise, just drop your donation in one of the containers provided. Since Homer’s Coffee House is a not-for-profit organization, your gift may be tax deductible.

We hope this information is useful in helping you decide how much you should give to the musicians. We are confidant that, with your help, we will be able to continue to offer outstanding performances without a required admission fee.
